It begins after the performance.

You've made it onto the stage, fully dressed, properly prepared, and you've performed with all the sincerity the occasion seemed to require. The lights haven't quite gone down. Your body is still holding the final pose. You look out toward the seats and find them, empty.

It's not exactly a disaster. More like a small, well-dressed embarrassment, with pride refusing to collapse on cue. You arranged yourself as if you'd be seen. You carried the whole thing through as if an answer would arrive. But then, at the end, it appears you may have gone to all that trouble for no one.
